Understanding emissions across Kirklees

Kirklees Climate Commission has created a new working group to better understand the sources of greenhouse gas emissions across the district.

The group is led by Richard Clifton, who joined the Commission in early 2025 and brings extensive industrial experience in carbon monitoring and emissions reduction. He is now working with other Commissioners with relevant expertise, including Professor Peter Roberts, Gideon Richards and Dr Jialan (Snow) Wu , to review what data is available for the region, and how that can be used strategically to help reduce emissions.

Could you help drive climate action across the Kirklees district? 

The Kirklees Climate Commission (KCC) is an independent advocate driving fair, innovative and effective climate change action within the Kirklees district. It provides advice and services to help the district adapt to a rapidly changing climate while reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with national commitments. 

We are now looking for at least three new Commissioners to join the KCC, and are particularly keen to hear from leaders in the business community. 

Commission to help Uniform Exchange measure green impact

The Kirklees Climate Commission will help Huddersfield-based Uniform Exchange assess the environmental benefits of its work to share unwanted school clothing with families across the district. 

Uniform Exchange founder Kate France discussed the charity's work at the Commission's October meeting, held at the University of Huddersfield. 

Established in 2011, Uniform Exchange now works with all 182 schools in Kirklees to redistribute more than 75,000 items of uniform.

Seven new specialists have joined the Kirklees Climate Commission to help drive climate action across the district.

Thanks to all those who applied to join Kirklees Climate Commission as a Commissioners - bringing connections, experience and abilities from education, community, business and public sectors.

The process is for a few Commissioners to meet applicants and make recommendations.  All existing Commissioners are involved in the decision to appoint new Commissioners.  The Commissioner role is voluntary and they are appointed for three years.

We will share news about who the new Commissioners are soon.  Thanks again to all those who applied and those who promoted the opportunity.

Volunteering for Kirklees Climate Commission means we are surrounded by climate experts who often have decades of experience, and sometimes it can be mind-blowing. We have volunteered to help because we know it matters but do, we really know why?  In this article, we aim to demystify and help us all make more sense of it all and know why, and what we need to do.
